Geek Squad: Overpriced and Underwhelming

Today, technology plays an important role in our lives, so it would be great if it just worked all the time, amirite? Since this isn’t always the case, we have to rely on tech repair services to get us back up and running in as little time as possible and, PREFERABLY, as cheaply as possible. This demand for reliable and affordable tech repair has helped build a $19 Billion dollar Electronic and Computer Repair Industry, and led to the rise of famous brands like Best Buy’s Geek Squad.

Except, despite being renowned as the #1 Tech Support brand, Geek Squad continues to be universally panned on review forums such as Consumer Affairs, Customer Service Score Board, TrustPilot and Yelp, with overwhelmingly negative ratings and comments often citing the service as being too expensive while the Geeks are lacking in skill, knowledge, understanding and professionalism.

To receive services, you must be on a membership plan. Their “Total Tech Support” annual plan is $199.99 and while it does bring the price of a Computer Tune Up down from $99 to $49, customers are still frustrated with the poor quality of services that they are getting for what they’re paying. The ends are not justifying the means.

Geek Squad has also found themselves in legal hot water on several occasions regarding data theft and privacy concerns. In 2013, a young woman sued Best Buy when a few Geek Squad employees stole nudes from her personal computer and redistributed them online and in as recent as 2018, it was revealed that the FBI had been paying Geek Squad informants. Although the reason was to identify pedophiles, the execution received backlash.

But if they’re so terrible, why do so many people still use their services? The answer? Convenience. Unlike most tech repair stores which are much smaller and local, a Geek Squad in every Best Buy allows them to have a much wider reach and more resources. The same place that you can go to buy your laptop, you can also set up a subscription plan to get services whenever you need them, giving them several major advantages over the smaller competition. However, the lack of real competition has made Geek Squad take their customers for granted and, clearly, people are sick of it, but are left with no better alternatives, until now.

Better, faster and cheaper on demand tech services delivered to your home at the push of a button is the future of personal tech services. What will separate us from Geek Squad is that we will be bringing Corporate Quality IT Support from the office and straight into your homes, providing you with a higher level of care that users in a business are accustomed to. With TechStop, we want to ensure that you spend less time frustrated with your tech, and more time utilizing it to live your best life. We’ll ensure that our techs are vetted so that you are serviced by an actual technology professional and not a sales associate trying to sell you something, and we’ll be sure to put policies in place to protect you and your data so that you do not have to worry about that. We do not just want to fix your tech, we want to teach you a thing or two so that you become comfortable enough to tackle technical issues yourself, but can rest knowing that we are behind you every step of the way.

Technology is not the way of the future, people using technologies to live better is the way of the future and it will take all of us to make that a reality. Sign up to be one of our beta testers for our closed trail, help test the app and give input into the future of on demand tech repair.
